From Struggle to Success: Joyce Kemuma’s Inspiring Journey to Marathon Glory

On a chilly morning in Kapsabet, as the first rays of sunlight break through the rolling hills of Nandi County, Joyce Kemuma is already several kilometres into her daily training run. There is no renowned coach shouting instructions from the roadside. No sports scientist monitoring her heart rate. No manager arranging lucrative races overseas.

Instead, there is only Kemuma, a trusted pacemaker, and an unwavering belief that one day her persistence would pay off.

That belief became reality when the 38-year-old mother of one stormed to victory at the 2026 Nairobi City Marathon, clocking 2:27:43 to win the women’s race and take home KSh3.5 million. As she crossed the finish line ahead of a quality field, tears of joy replaced years of uncertainty, sacrifice and quiet determination.

For many, it was a surprise victory.

For Kemuma, it was the culmination of a dream she had spent years chasing.

A Dream Built on Sacrifice

Born in Nyamira County, Kemuma knew that talent alone would not be enough to succeed in Kenya’s fiercely competitive athletics scene.

Determined to improve, she made the difficult decision to leave home and relocate to Kapsabet, one of Kenya’s most successful long-distance running centres.

The move meant leaving behind familiar surroundings in pursuit of a better future.

Unlike many elite Kenyan athletes, Kemuma trains without the support of a professional coach or management company. Every training session demands personal discipline and careful planning. Her only consistent training companion is a pacemaker who helps maintain the pace during key workouts.

“I believed that if I continued working hard, my breakthrough would eventually come,” Kemuma told newslightKenya.co.ke on the phone after a morning training session.

Those words capture the mindset that has defined her career.

The Race That Changed Everything

Before Nairobi came Eldoret.

At the 2026 Eldoret City Marathon, Kemuma finished fifth in 2:32:24. Although she missed the podium, the performance gave her something far more valuable—confidence.

Competing against some of Kenya’s finest marathon runners convinced her that she belonged among the country’s best.

She returned to training with renewed determination, convinced that victory was only a matter of time.

That confidence was rewarded in Nairobi.

Running with patience and tactical awareness, Kemuma stayed with the leading pack before making her decisive move in the closing stages. When she crossed the finish line, she had not only won the biggest race of her career but had also announced herself as one of Kenya’s newest marathon stars.

A Journey of Steady Progress

Kemuma’s success did not happen overnight.

Her performances show the story of an athlete improving year after year.

At the 2025 Eldoret City Marathon, she finished sixth in 2:33:12.

One year later, she improved to fifth in 2:32:24.

Then came the breakthrough victory at the Nairobi city Marathon in 2:27:43, slicing nearly five minutes off her previous marathon best.

The progression reflects countless kilometres logged on rural roads, disciplined training sessions and an athlete determined to keep pushing her limits.

The Importance of Local Marathons

Kemuma’s story also highlights the growing importance of Kenya’s local marathon circuit.

For athletes without sponsorship, management or invitations to international races, competitions such as the Eldoret City Marathon and Nairobi city Marathon provide an opportunity to compete against elite runners while earning meaningful prize money.

For many, these races are more than sporting events.

They are career lifelines.

Prize money allows athletes to support their families, invest in training and continue chasing opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.

Kemuma is among many talented runners whose careers have been sustained by these domestic competitions.

Investing in the Future

Winning KSh3.5 million has given Kemuma financial security she had only imagined.

Rather than celebrating with extravagant spending, she already has a clear plan.

She intends to buy land, improve her training equipment and secure a better future for her family.

After taking a short break to recover, she plans to begin preparations for her next marathon challenge.

Her ambitions have only grown.

An Inspiration Beyond Athletics

Kemuma’s rise carries a message that extends far beyond marathon running.

In a country celebrated for producing world champions, many talented athletes remain unknown because they lack sponsors, coaches or management.

Yet Kemuma’s success proves that determination, discipline and resilience can still open doors.

Her journey offers hope to countless young athletes training on village roads across Kenya, reminding them that greatness is not reserved for those with the best facilities but for those who refuse to give up.

As she continues her morning runs through the hills of Kapsabet, Joyce Kemuma is no longer simply chasing success.

She has become a symbol of perseverance.

From the quiet roads of Nyamira to the streets of Nairobi, her remarkable journey proves that sometimes the greatest victories belong not to the favourites, but to those who never stop believing.

For Joyce Kemuma, the road to marathon glory has been long and demanding—but if her steady rise is any indication, this remarkable chapter is only the beginning of an even greater legacy.
