AK Names Strong Team for World U20 Championships in Oregon
Athletics Kenya has named a strong squad to represent Kenya at the World Under-20 Championships set for August 5 to 9 in Oregon.
The federation expressed confidence in the youthful team, noting that Kenya’s junior athletes have consistently performed strongly on the global stage and are expected to maintain the country’s dominance in middle and long-distance races.
Selected athletes are scheduled to report to residential training camp on July 6 ahead of the championships in the United States.
The squad features promising talents across track events, including 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m and steeplechase disciplines.
In the girls’ 5,000m, Cynthia Chepkurui and Joyline Chepkemoi earned selection, while Nehemiah Kipng’eno and Frankline Kibet will compete in the boys’ category.
The boys’ 3,000m team comprises Emmanuel Kiprono and Elkanah Sanutia, while Faith Cherotich and Mercy Chepng’eno will line up in the girls’ race.
Josephine Sembeyo and Caren Chepchirchir were picked for the girls’ 1,500m, with Wilson Chepkwech and David Kapaiko selected in the boys’ event.
In the 3,000m steeplechase, Anatasha Cheptoo and Mercy Chepng’eno will compete in the girls’ race, while Emmanuel Lemiso and Nicholas Kitum will represent Kenya in the boys’ category.
Nancy Chepng’etich and Nancy Kibet were selected for the girls’ 800m, while Nashon Pkiach and Collins Tentera made the boys’ team.
Louis Khawel secured selection in the boys’ 100m sprint, as Nancy Kibet and Judith Sapato were named in the girls’ 400m event.
Kenya will be seeking another strong outing at the global junior championships as the country continues to nurture the next generation of athletics stars.
