Sakaja Steps Up City Upgrade as Streetlights, Pavements Get Facelift

Nairobi City
The Nairobi City County Government has intensified its urban renewal programme, with reinstated street lighting and upgraded pavements forming the latest phase of Governor Johnson Sakaja’s beautification agenda.
The works, currently underway across major corridors including the CBD, Kileleshwa, Eastlands and Westlands, are designed to enhance security, improve pedestrian mobility and restore the capital’s aesthetic appeal.
County officials say the improvements are part of a broader initiative to streamline service delivery and position Nairobi as a competitive regional hub.
Governor Sakaja has anchored his development blueprint on making Nairobi work through cleaner streets, functioning utilities and improved urban order.
The renewed lighting systems are expected to bolster night-time business operations and reduce crime incidents, while upgraded pedestrian walkways aim to ease commuter movement in one of Africa’s busiest metros.
Nairobi, popularly known as the city in the sun, is the only capital globally that hosts a national park within its periphery a feature that continues to boost its tourism profile. With a population of over five million and home to Kibera, one of Africa’s largest informal settlements, the city presents both immense economic potential and persistent urban management challenges.
The county has in recent months expanded investments in waste management, drainage rehabilitation and transport infrastructure, as it targets a modern, orderly capital capable of attracting increased foreign investment and sustaining its growing urban population.
