Kaplong Girls High School Closed After Student Uproar Over Sexual Harassment Claims

Kaplong Girls High School in Bomet County has been closed indefinitely after students staged a protest over allegations of sexual harassment by a male teacher, sparking concern among parents and education stakeholders.

The protest, which erupted within the school compound, disrupted learning activities and forced the school administration to send students home in an effort to defuse the growing tensions. Learners are said to have voiced frustration over what they termed as repeated inappropriate conduct by the teacher, calling for urgent intervention by the relevant authorities.

School Principal Claire Mitei confirmed the closure, stating that the decision was made to safeguard students’ well-being and allow room for an impartial investigation into the disturbing claims.

“The safety and mental wellness of our students is our top priority. We have decided to suspend learning temporarily to allow investigations to be conducted without pressure,” said Mitei.

Sources within the school indicate that the teacher at the centre of the allegations has previously been the subject of informal complaints, though no official disciplinary action had been taken until now. Education officials and law enforcement have since been notified and are expected to initiate a formal probe into the matter.

Parents who arrived at the school to pick up their children expressed shock and demanded justice for any students affected, while urging the Ministry of Education to take swift disciplinary action if the allegations are confirmed.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has yet to issue a formal statement on the matter, but rights groups are already calling for an independent inquiry and enhanced protection measures in boarding schools.

Meanwhile, Kaplong Girls will remain closed until further notice, pending the outcome of the investigation
