Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured the public that Kenya is fully prepared to host the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), with robust security and logistical arrangements already in place. The tournament kicks off on August 2, with the final set for August 30 at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium.

Speaking during an inspection tour of Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen, accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, assessed the country’s readiness for the high-profile continental event.

He emphasized that Kenya’s hosting of CHAN is a source of national pride and that ensuring the safety of players, fans, and international guests remains a top priority.

“We are honored to be hosting the CHAN finals this year. It’s a moment of pride for the nation, and we have put in place comprehensive measures to ensure the tournament runs smoothly and securely,” Murkomen stated.

Key security preparations include the installation of high-tech CCTV cameras, controlled access points at stadiums, robust crowd control mechanisms, and the deployment of emergency response teams alongside a coordinated security presence at all venues.

Murkomen further disclosed that the government had streamlined immigration procedures, including visa processing, to facilitate swift and efficient entry for international teams and delegates.

“We want our guests to feel welcomed and experience the best of Kenyan hospitality from the moment they arrive,” he said.

He urged Kenyans to show their support by turning up in large numbers to back the national team and help create a vibrant tournament atmosphere. “The fans are the twelfth player on the field. Let’s stand behind our team and push them to victory,” he added.

Murkomen also lauded the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports for completing critical renovations at stadiums and training facilities on time.

With more than 18 African countries expected to participate, the CHAN tournament is seen as an opportunity to showcase Kenya’s sporting infrastructure and organizational capability on the global stage. The event is being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with the opening ceremony scheduled at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam and some matches set to be played at Mandela Stadium in Kampala.

Murkomen called on citizens to not only attend matches but also to warmly receive visitors, presenting Kenya as a secure, welcoming, and united host nation.
