Millions of Kenyans continue to benefit from free M-PESA transactions, with more than half of all mobile money transfers attracting no charges, according to Safaricom’s latest half-year financial results.

The results for the six months ended September 30, 2026, show that 53 per cent of all M-PESA transactions were free, underscoring the telecommunications company’s efforts to make digital financial services more affordable and accessible.

The report further indicates that approximately 81 per cent of Lipa na M-PESA and Pochi la Biashara merchant transactions were free, while 63 per cent of consumer transactions attracted no charges during the period.

The continued provision of free transactions is expected to support individuals, small businesses and entrepreneurs who rely on mobile money services for their daily financial activities.

Meanwhile, Safaricom Ethiopia recorded growth in its customer base, reaching 15.4 million active customers over a three-month period as demand for mobile connectivity and digital financial services continues to rise.

Beyond its financial performance, Safaricom has also reported significant progress in its community investment programmes.

Through the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, the company impacted more than 1.5 million lives during the first half of the 2026/2027 financial year through initiatives targeting education, healthcare and economic empowerment.

The company is also investing in youth development through the fifth season of the Safaricom Chapa Dimba football tournament, which has attracted 60,000 young players.

The initiatives form part of Safaricom’s broader commitment to using technology and community partnerships to improve livelihoods, create opportunities and support sustainable development.

The latest results highlight the company’s continued focus on expanding access to digital financial services while strengthening its regional presence and social impact.
