Eastleigh building collapse: First body retrieved as four survivors rescued

The first body has been retrieved from the rubble of a multi-storey building that collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as search-and-rescue operations continue.

The National Police Service (NPS) said the body, identified as that of a woman, was recovered on Friday, October 30, 2026, a week after the building under construction collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh.

In an update shared on its X account on Friday, the NPS said four survivors had so far been pulled alive from the rubble and rushed to hospital for medical attention.

The service expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased while wishing those injured a quick and full recovery.

Four survivors rescued

The multi-agency team has continued search-and-rescue operations at the site since the building collapsed on Friday, October 23, 2026.

The NPS said it was supporting the ongoing operation alongside other emergency responders as efforts to locate anyone who may still be trapped under the debris continued.

The recovery of the first body marks a grim development in the rescue mission, which has involved emergency personnel and specialised equipment working through the rubble.

Authorities have not provided further details about the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Families urged to report missing relatives

The NPS has urged families seeking information about missing relatives to report to the Kenya Red Cross desk established at the scene.

Those unable to reach the desk have been advised to call the emergency response number 1199 for assistance.

The service also appealed to members of the public to keep away from the affected site to allow rescue personnel, emergency responders and specialised equipment to operate without obstruction.

Investigations into collapse ongoing

The NPS said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the building collapse were ongoing, adding that further updates would be issued as new developments emerged.

The incident has drawn attention to the risks associated with building construction and the importance of ensuring safety standards are observed at construction sites.

Rescue operations are continuing as authorities work to establish what caused the collapse and account for anyone who may still be missing.
