Kitui Green Run Targets 1,000 Participants in Push for Climate and Water Conservation

More than 1,000 participants are expected to take part in the upcoming Kitui Green Run as organizers intensify campaigns to position the event as a platform for climate awareness, water conservation and environmental sustainability.

Dubbed “Running for Rain,” the marathon is expected to bring together elite athletes, amateur runners, environmental champions and local residents in a collective effort to highlight the growing challenge of water scarcity in Kitui County and other arid and semi-arid regions.

The event is scheduled to take place on 31st May Sunday at Ithookwe stadium.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV Kenya, Chief Steward of Green Foundation Dr. Isaac Kalua said the race symbolizes the resilience and determination of the people of Kitui in the face of recurring climate challenges.

“Kitui means resilience,” Kalua said as he urged Kenyans from across the country to register and support the initiative.

According to the organizers, the event seeks to create awareness on the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices and innovative solutions to address persistent water shortages affecting communities in the region.

Kalua, a long-time advocate for green energy and environmental sustainability, noted that the marathon will also serve as a platform to promote climate action, community empowerment and investment in water access projects.

Organizers have announced a total prize purse of Sh2.5 million, a move expected to attract strong competition from both professional and recreational runners.

Beyond athletics, the event is expected to spotlight the growing effects of climate change in semi-arid regions while mobilizing support for long-term water conservation initiatives.

The organizers say proceeds and partnerships from the race will support projects aimed at improving access to clean and reliable water for affected communities.

The event also reflects a growing trend in Kenya where marathons are increasingly being used as platforms to champion environmental protection, health awareness and community development initiatives.

Participants will compete across different race categories including 2km, 5km, 10km and the flagship 21km half marathon.
