Kenyan young stars excel in Alexandria prep for Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics

Kenya’s rising wrestling stars have once again put the country on the continental map after securing four medals at the African U17 Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, in a performance that underlined the growing strength of the sport in the country.

The youthful squad, competing against some of the continent’s finest young wrestlers, delivered spirited displays to bring home one silver and three bronze medals, a result that has boosted optimism over Kenya’s future in wrestling ahead of the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympics.

Leading the medal charge was Jemimmah Nakhumicha, who claimed silver in the women’s 65kg category after an impressive run to the final. Nakhumicha showcased skill, strength and determination throughout the competition, emerging as one of Kenya’s standout performers in the tournament.
Joy Lichuma added to Kenya’s medal tally after winning bronze in the women’s 57kg category. Lichuma battled through a highly competitive field and showed resilience on her way to the podium, underlining her promise as one of the country’s upcoming wrestling talents.
Sophia Nancy also secured bronze in the women’s 73kg category after a strong campaign that saw her display tactical discipline and composure against experienced opponents. Her performance further highlighted the depth of talent within Kenya’s junior wrestling ranks.

Joy Shalline completed Kenya’s medal haul by winning bronze in the women’s 49kg category, capping off a memorable outing for the national team in Egypt.

The results mark a major milestone for Wrestling Kenya, which has in recent years intensified efforts to identify and nurture young talent with the aim of strengthening the country’s presence on the international stage.

Kenya has traditionally enjoyed success in athletics, but wrestling has increasingly emerged as a sport with huge potential, especially among the youth. The performances in Alexandria are expected to inspire more young athletes to take up the sport and pursue opportunities at the highest level.
