KAM Calls for Peaceful Protests Amid Fuel Cost Concerns

The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has urged Kenyans to exercise restraint and uphold peace during planned demonstrations over the rising cost of fuel, even as concerns over the high cost of living persist.

In a statement issued Monday, KAM acknowledged public discontent following the recent fuel price review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on April 8.

The association welcomed the President’s assent to the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which reduces VAT on fuel from 16 percent to 8 percent, terming it a positive step towards easing the burden on consumers.

However, KAM noted that both citizens and industry players remain concerned about persistently high petroleum prices and the broader cost of living, calling for further government intervention.

While affirming the constitutional right to peaceful assembly under Article 37 of the Constitution, KAM cautioned that demonstrations must not compromise public safety or result in the destruction of property and businesses.

“Such actions must safeguard human life and property, and should not disrupt livelihoods,” the statement read.

The manufacturers’ body highlighted that Kenya, like many economies in the region, continues to grapple with economic pressures driven by global geopolitical tensions, leaving businesses operating under constrained conditions.

KAM emphasized that maintaining peace and stability is essential for economic recovery and sustained industrial growth.

The association called on political leaders to prioritise dialogue and constructive engagement with stakeholders to resolve the current challenges.

It also urged law enforcement agencies to ensure the protection of citizens and property during the demonstrations.

Further, Kenyans were encouraged to embrace tolerance, nationalism, and peaceful approaches in addressing economic concerns.

KAM reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to find sustainable solutions that support industrialisation and long-term socio-economic growth.
