Women leaders, journalists, climate champions and gospel ministers were celebrated during the 2026 Independent Kenya Women Awards held at Southfield Mall in Nairobi on May 9.
The glamorous gala brought together women from different sectors across the country to honour excellence, leadership and community transformation. The awards recognised individuals making a difference in media, education, sustainability, entrepreneurship and social impact.
The event, popularly known as IKWA, celebrated the Top 100 Most Impactful Women in Leadership under a theme focused on empowering communities and transforming Kenya through women led initiatives. According to the organisers, the awards are a research based platform dedicated to recognising women whose work continues to shape society positively.
One of the major highlights of the night was the recognition of four journalists from Kenya Broadcasting Corporation who were feted for their contribution to the media industry.
The recognition reflected the growing role of women in shaping conversations in journalism, digital media and public communication. The honour was also viewed as a significant milestone for women working in public service broadcasting in Kenya.
Among those recognised was Lydia Nyairabu, who was awarded Vernacular TV Media Personality of the Year for her contribution to vernacular broadcasting and audience engagement. Her recognition highlighted the importance of local language media in informing, educating and connecting communities across the country.
Speaking during the ceremony, several winners expressed gratitude for the recognition and encouraged women to continue supporting one another in leadership and professional spaces.
“Women are rising through service, innovation and resilience. This recognition is proof that hard work and commitment to communities never goes unnoticed,” one of the speakers said during the event.
The awards ceremony also honoured Noni Kariuki with the Excellence in Sustainability and Climate Leadership Award in recognition of her efforts in environmental conservation and climate advocacy. Her achievement reflected the growing influence of women in championing environmental sustainability and climate action in Kenya.
Gospel ministry was also celebrated during the gala after Msanii Music Group received the Excellence in Gospel Music Impact, Digital Ministry and Community Transformation Award. The group was recognised for using gospel music and digital platforms to inspire hope and positively impact communities.
Organisers of the awards said the platform seeks to celebrate women who are making meaningful contributions to society through leadership, mentorship, advocacy and innovation.
“The Independent Kenya Women Awards is more than a celebration. It is a platform that recognises women whose work continues to transform lives and inspire future generations,” the organisers noted.
The colourful gala attracted leaders, entrepreneurs, media personalities, artists and youth advocates from different counties. Guests described the event as a powerful moment of celebrating resilience, determination and women empowerment.
The recognition of women journalists during the event also reflected the increasing appreciation of female voices in Kenya’s media landscape. Over the years, women in journalism have continued to break barriers and take up influential roles in television, radio and digital media.
