UoN Terrorists, USIU Flames lift basketball titles as KU shine in netball
University of Nairobi (UoN) Terrorists and United States International University (USIU) Flames emerged basketball champions at the concluded Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) National Games held at the University of Eldoret.
The Brian Busu-coached Terrorists outplayed African Nazarene University (ANU) 69–52 to clinch the men’s title, extending their dominance over ANU after also beating them in the group stages.
Busu said the triumph was timely as the side prepares for the Kenya Basketball Federation Premier League season set to begin on January 24.
“We have missed out on this title for years and winning it now is a major boost as we prepare for the league,” said Busu.
The champions took control early, winning the opening quarter 24–7 and heading into the break with a commanding 42–22 lead. They extended the advantage in the third quarter before ANU claimed the final period.
In the women’s final, USIU Flames defeated Kisii University 57–33 to lift the title, with Ninen Naiserian scoring 17 points for the winners. Lovin Atieno led Kisii with 12 points.
USIU coach George Mayenge said the victory was sweet revenge after losing to Kisii in a recent championship.
“We wanted to respond strongly after our last defeat. This win motivates us as we prepare for the playoffs and the league,” said Mayenge.
Kenyatta University (KU) dominated the netball competition, winning both the men’s and women’s titles in a round-robin format after recording perfect records in both categories.
In the men’s standings, KU finished ahead of hosts University of Eldoret (UoE) and Kisii University, while in the women’s competition, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) placed second behind KU as UoE settled for third.
The football final between defending champions KU Hardnuts and hosts UoE was abandoned after fans invaded the pitch following the hosts’ equaliser in the second half.
KU had taken the lead through captain Austin Tandasi before Peter Ouma levelled in the 60th minute. One KU player was injured during the invasion, prompting the visitors to decline to continue, forcing match officials to halt the contest.
UoE captain Jeff Oluoch said the hosts were disappointed by the outcome, adding that they await an official decision from KUSF.
In volleyball, UoN stunned defending champions MMUST in a five-set thriller to claim the title.
