Sirikwa Classic targets 3,500 kids after Kenya’s global athletics triumph

Organisers of the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour have set an ambitious target of over 3,500 children for the Kids Athletics races during this year’s event, scheduled for February 14, 2026, at Lobo Village in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

The move follows Kenya’s top global performance in the World Athletics Kids’ Athletics Day Member Federation Challenge, where the country was ranked the best federation worldwide for mobilising children in grassroots athletics activities.

Sirikwa Classic Competition Director Kennedy Tanui said the expanded focus on young athletes is part of a long-term strategy to nurture future champions.

“Kids are the future champions of this country and they must be nurtured early. Last year, we had about 3,000 children competing, and this year we are targeting 3,500 to strengthen talent development and make the event even more attractive,” said Tanui.

He added that Kenya’s global recognition highlights the importance of early exposure to structured competition for young athletes.

“With Kenya being recognised internationally, it is important for our local kids to gain exposure and compete at a level that prepares them for the world stage,” he said.

Organisers will partner with schools across Uasin Gishu County to boost participation, tapping into what Tanui described as a rich pool of young talent.
The Kids Athletics programme will feature races for boys and girls in three age categories — 5–8 years, 9–12 years, and 13–15 years.

The Sirikwa Classic is a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold Label event and continues to grow in stature, blending elite international competition with strong grassroots development.

Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei welcomed Kenya’s global recognition, saying the achievement reflects the strength of the country’s grassroots athletics structures.

He said the Kids’ Athletics programme has become a key pillar in talent identification while promoting physical development, teamwork and a lifelong appreciation for sport.
