Shinyalu football tournament ends with scholarship promise for players

A football tournament organised by Shinyalu FKF ended on Sunday with the top two teams Lucky Stars and Lyon FC sharing the prize after finishing level, as Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana pledged full scholarships for selected players to pursue technical courses.
The tournament, sponsored by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) at a cost of Sh1 million, brought together eight teams and was attended by Ikana and Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka together with other politicians.
Lucky Stars and Lyon FC emerged at the top of the competition, with each team receiving Sh150,000 after the two sides finished tied at the top.
Beyond the tournament prizes, Ikana announced plans to use the competition to identify young footballers who could benefit from education and skills training.
The MP said the Ikana Foundation would select two players from each of the participating categories, making a total of 16 players, to receive full scholarships for technical courses at Sigalagala National Polytechnic.
The scholarship programme is intended to give the young players an opportunity to pursue education alongside their football careers, providing an alternative pathway for those who may not immediately secure professional opportunities in the sport.
The tournament also brought renewed attention to the role of local competitions in identifying and nurturing football talent at the grassroots.
Ikana has previously supported education and sports-related initiatives in Shinyalu through his foundation. In 2022, he announced that his salary would be channelled to the Ikana Maendeleo Foundation to support charitable programmes, including education for needy learners.
The MP has also previously spoken about the need to create opportunities for talented young people in football, including through partnerships that can provide access to football scholarships and sporting equipment.
The tournament comes as football continues to attract growing attention in Shinyalu, where local competitions have also been used to identify players for higher levels of competition. FKF records, for instance, show Lucky Stars competing in the Shinyalu Sub County League, where the team finished among the leading sides in the 2025/26 season.
Ikana also called for continued efforts to address challenges affecting football administration, urging the Football Kenya Federation to resolve issues at the national office to ensure the sport runs smoothly.
The event also took a political turn, with leaders calling for continued support for President William Ruto’s administration, while Ikana criticised what he described as propaganda associated with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The political remarks came against the backdrop of increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election. Ikana and Lusaka have previously appeared together at public events where they have called for peaceful political engagement and cautioned young people against being used in political violence.
For the young footballers who took part in the Shinyalu tournament, however, the most immediate outcome was the opportunity to combine sporting talent with education, with the promised scholarships offering selected players a route into technical training beyond the football pitch.
