Ruto cites major progress in health, trade and security after meeting Trump

President William Ruto called his recent talks with U.S. President Donald Trump a “watershed moment” for Kenya’s diplomatic strategy, outlining new health, trade and security agreements during a visit to Washington.

He said both governments pledged to accelerate cooperation in public health, expand access to U.S. markets and deepen joint security operations across East Africa, moves he described as critical to Kenya’s long-term economic and regional stability goals.

Ruto said the United States offered “generous hospitality” to the Kenyan delegation and signaled readiness to strengthen collaboration in disease surveillance, primary healthcare and advanced medical technologies.

He said the expanded health partnership would help Kenya advance toward universal health coverage.

On trade and investment, Ruto cited progress in opening new markets, supporting African manufacturing and boosting digital and green industries.

He said U.S. officials conveyed support for increased American investment in Kenya’s infrastructure and technology sectors, which he believes will help drive youth employment.

Economic analysts note Kenya has sought broader access to U.S. markets as global competition rises. Ruto’s comments suggest negotiations on value chains, investment structures and emerging trade pathways are moving at an accelerated pace.

Ruto also highlighted security talks, saying the United States reaffirmed its commitment to stability efforts in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region. Counter-terrorism, maritime safety and conflict-resolution initiatives were central to the discussions.

He praised what he called Trump’s “personal leadership” and said Kenya is prepared to implement the commitments reached during the visit. Ruto said the government intends to translate the agreements into “practical gains” for citizens while elevating the partnership into one of Africa’s most consequential.

The visit signals Nairobi’s intention to anchor its economic and security agenda to closer alignment with Washington as both countries enter a new phase in their long-standing relationship.
