Renowned Kenyan Literary Icon Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o Dies at 87

Kenya and the literary world are mourning the death of celebrated author and scholar Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, who passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 87.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his daughter, Wanjiku wa Ngugi, in a heartfelt statement issued by the family.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o this Wednesday morning, 28th May 2025. He lived a full life, fought a good fight. As was his last wish, let’s celebrate his life and his work,” the statement read.

Ngũgĩ, a trailblazer in African literature and a staunch advocate for indigenous languages, leaves behind a towering legacy of literary brilliance and cultural activism. His works, including A Grain of Wheat, Petals of Blood, and Decolonising the Mind, have inspired generations and challenged systems of oppression.

Tributes are being received from across the globe, hailing him as a fearless voice of conscience and a champion of African identity.
