Raila Odinga AUC Bid Gains Lake Side Caucus Support, Sparks Call for Youth Involvement in AU Affairs
The Lake Side Caucus, a coalition of student leaders from universities across Kenya, has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Right Honorable Raila Amolo Odinga for his commendable bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.
While the election did not favor Kenya’s candidate, the student leaders hailed Odinga’s unwavering commitment to social, political and economic transformation, describing his legacy as a cornerstone of both Kenyan and African history.
The caucus also welcomed Odinga back home, reaffirming their enduring bond with the seasoned statesman.
While acknowledging the complexities of the AUC election, they noted that external geopolitical factors significantly influenced the outcome, despite Kenya’s robust campaign.
In a show of unity, the student leaders aligned with President William Ruto and Odinga in congratulating the winning candidate and reiterated their support for the African Union’s vision of unity, peace, and prosperity.
They caucus praised both leaders for exhibiting exemplary statesmanship in the face of the electoral outcome, expressing a profound gratitude to President William Ruto for his relentless support of Odinga’s candidacy.
They commended the President’s strategic mobilization of government resources, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, intelligence agencies and Kenyan diplomatic missions, which enabled Odinga to secure victories in the initial four rounds of the election.
“President Ruto’s tireless efforts to rally African nations behind Kenya’s candidate reflect his deep commitment to continental leadership,” the statement read, adding that his actions resonate with Aristotle’s philosophy that ‘Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.
Advancing Pan-Africanism and Student Participation in AU Affairs
In their way forward, the Lake Side Caucus has urged the African Union to integrate university students into its decision-making processes to cultivate Pan-Africanism at the grassroots level.
They put forth several proposals aimed at strengthening youth involvement in continental governance including, Student Shadowing Programs at the AU where the caucus has called on the AU to establish structured shadowing programs, allowing university students to engage with AU officials and participate in policy discussions.
Such initiatives, they argued would provide young Africans with firsthand experience in leadership and governance.
Another reform include the Creation of Pan-African University Forums and Digital Repositories which aims to facilitate intellectual exchange and cultural dialogue among students.
They advocated for digital repositories documenting the contributions of Africa’s greats, from the founders of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to modern leaders like Raila Odinga, ensuring their legacies inspire future generations.
The caucus suggested the creation of AU Centers for Democracy and Governance within African universities. These centers would serve as hubs for research, dialogue and advocacy on democratic governance, drawing inspiration from Africa’s history of student-led activism.
Seeking National Leadership Support
To propel these proposals forward, the student leaders announced plans to seek an audience with President Ruto, Odinga, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
They aim to discuss how these initiatives can be institutionalized within the African Union framework.
“We believe that with national leadership backing, these proposals can gain momentum and bring meaningful change,” the caucus stated.
They noted that the future of Africa belongs to the youth, and we must ensure that their voices shape the policies of tomorrow.”The student leaders stated.
The Student leaders have urged the African Union to embrace their proposals and called on all stakeholders to support efforts toward a united and prosperous Africa.
