Open University of Kenya Expands Academic Offerings with 10 Cutting-Edge Programmes
The Open University of Kenya (OUK) has unveiled 10 new academic programmes to address the evolving demands of industry and technological advancement in the country.
The announcement was made on Monday during a launch event at the institution’s premises, presided over by OUK’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Elijah Omwenga.
The newly introduced courses span critical areas such as Agricultural Technology, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Business Administration, reinforcing OUK’s position as a pioneer in digital education.
“We started with seven programmes, and now we are launching 10 more. Additionally, we plan to introduce eight professional development courses covering vital areas like Mental Health Awareness, Gender and Diversity, Emotional Intelligence, and Corporate Governance,” said Professor Omwenga.
He noted that the expansion would boost student enrollment and strengthen OUK’s role in shaping the future of higher education in Kenya.
However, he acknowledged financial constraints in hiring top-tier faculty, stating that mutual agreements have been necessary to attract experts.
Making his remarks,Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Carolyne Omulando, emphasized that the curriculum development process was guided by market demand and technological trends, ensuring the courses remain relevant and impactful.
Since its inception in 2023, OUK has enrolled 2,500 students, a number expected to grow significantly with the introduction of the new programmes.
As Kenya’s first fully digital university, OUK continues to break barriers in higher education, making quality learning accessible to a broader audience.
