Kip Keino Classic Elevates Nairobi’s Global Athletics Profile
Nairobi is set to once again host world class athletics as the Kip Keino Classic returns on April 24, with organisers promising a strong lineup of elite competitors from across the globe.
The one-day meet, to be held at Nyayo National Stadium, continues to grow in stature, attracting Olympic champions, world title holders and emerging talents in both track and field disciplines.
Meet director Barnaba Korir said preparations are on course, expressing confidence that this year’s edition will live up to expectations.
“The Kip Keino Classic keeps growing every year, attracting the world’s top athletes,” said Korir. “We are seeing increased interest from elite competitors, which is a clear indication that the event is gaining global recognition.”
Among the headline acts confirmed for the Nairobi showpiece is Canada’s Olympic and world hammer throw champion Ethan Katzberg. His participation is expected to spice up the field events, which have increasingly drawn attention in recent editions of the meet.
Korir noted that the inclusion of top-tier field athletes alongside elite runners reflects the organisers’ commitment to delivering a balanced and competitive programme.
“We want to give fans a complete athletics experience. It is not just about track races but also showcasing excellence in field events,” he said.
Since its inception, the Kip Keino Classic has steadily risen to become one of Africa’s premier athletics meetings and a key fixture on the World Athletics Continental Tour.
The event is named after Kenyan athletics legend Kipchoge Keino, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes.
Beyond the competition, the meet offers Kenyan fans a rare opportunity to watch some of the world’s best athletes compete on home soil, while also providing local talent with a platform to test themselves against international opposition.
This year’s edition is expected to attract a strong local contingent, including national team athletes looking to sharpen their form ahead of upcoming global championships.
Organisers say they are also working closely with stakeholders to ensure smooth logistics, adequate facilities and a memorable experience for both athletes and spectators.
