Jubilee Calls for United Opposition Ahead of Ol Kalou By-Election

A Jubilee Party press statement issued on April 22, 2026, calls for a united opposition ahead of the Ol Kalou by-election following the death of area MP David Kiaraho

The Jubilee Party has called for unity among opposition leaders ahead of the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election, urging coalition partners to rally behind a single candidate in what it describes as a defining political moment.
In a press statement released on April 22, 2026, the party emphasized the need for a united front to offer Kenyans a credible and formidable alternative government. The statement follows the burial of the late David Kiaraho, who served as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency under the Jubilee Party.
Jubilee noted that the nation is still reflecting on the loss of Kiaraho, describing him as a leader whose life was marked by humility, service, and an unbreakable bond with the people he represented. As attention now shifts to the forthcoming by-election, the party reaffirmed its intention to field a candidate to retain the seat, which was previously held by one of its own.
“The Party will field a candidate in the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election, in line with the fact that the position was previously held by a member of the Jubilee Party,” the statement read. It added that the nomination process would be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, reflecting democratic values and the will of the people.

However, beyond fielding its own candidate, Jubilee used the opportunity to appeal to opposition partners to prioritize unity over competition. The party said it recognizes the growing call by Kenyans for a cohesive opposition capable of presenting a viable alternative to the current administration.
“In the spirit of building a credible, united, and formidable alternative government, Jubilee Party respectfully urges our coalition partners to support the fielding of a single opposition candidate under the Jubilee Party banner,” the statement said.

The party described the upcoming by-election as a “defining moment for the opposition,” noting that Kenyans across the country are increasingly vocal in their demand for unity of purpose among leaders. According to Jubilee, citizens are calling for cooperation over competition and long-term strategy over short-term political interests.
The statement further highlighted the party’s track record in supporting opposition unity through deliberate and strategic actions. Jubilee cited the Mbeere North Constituency and ward elections, where it stepped aside to support a unified opposition front, as evidence of its commitment to coalition politics.

Additionally, the party referenced its recent involvement in the Emurua Dikirr Constituency by-election in Narok County. In that contest, Jubilee and its partners agreed on a single opposition candidate, a move the party described as intentional and principled.
“We must remain faithful to this precedent, which we have continued to uphold in subsequent by-elections,” the statement noted. Jubilee added that such an approach aligns with the expectations of Kenyans who are calling on opposition leaders to act as one and present a credible alternative leadership.
The party reiterated that unity remains its guiding principle as it seeks to strengthen the opposition’s position nationally. It argued that fragmentation within opposition ranks only weakens its ability to effectively challenge the government and address the needs of citizens.
At the same time, Jubilee clarified that its call for unity does not undermine its broader political ambitions. The party confirmed that it will field candidates across all elective positions in the 2027 General Election, from Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to the presidency.
“Further, for the avoidance of doubt, let it be known that Jubilee Party will field candidates in all electoral positions all over the country… in the upcoming general elections, 2027,” the statement affirmed.

The remarks signal Jubilee’s intent to remain a key player in Kenya’s political landscape, even as it pushes for strategic cooperation within the opposition.
Political analysts observe that the Ol Kalou by-election could serve as a litmus test for opposition unity ahead of the next general election. A coordinated approach, they say, could strengthen the opposition’s bargaining power and demonstrate its readiness to govern.
The party’s appeal comes at a time when Kenyan politics continues to experience shifting alliances and growing public demand for accountability, service delivery, and inclusive governance. Jubilee’s message reflects an attempt to position itself at the center of efforts to consolidate opposition forces.
As preparations for the by-election gather pace, attention will be on how opposition leaders respond to Jubilee’s call and whether they will prioritize collective strength over individual party interests.

The Ol Kalou by-election is expected to attract significant political interest, with parties keen to test their influence and popularity in the region. For Jubilee, the contest represents not only an opportunity to retain the seat but also a chance to demonstrate leadership in shaping a unified opposition.
The outcome of the election, and the level of cooperation among opposition players, may ultimately influence the broader political dynamics heading into the 2027 General Election.
