Infotrak Poll: Kalonzo Musyoka Leads Opposition Presidential Race, Matiang’i Close Behind

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is the most preferred opposition presidential candidate for 2027, according to a new Infotrak survey.

The poll released Monday shows Musyoka leading with 27% support among opposition-leaning respondents, followed closely by Jubilee’s Fred Matiang’i at 26%. Linda Mwananchi’s Edwin Sifuna ranks third with 19%, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua trails at 9%.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga received 3% support, and PLP leader Martha Karua got 2%. George Natembeya, Eugene Wamalwa, Okiya Omtatah and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino each attracted 1%.

Ten percent of respondents were undecided.

Regional and Demographic Breakdowns

Musyoka enjoys his strongest backing in the Eastern region at 48% and North Eastern at 34%. He maintains relatively even support across age groups 26-55, polling between 26% and 29%.

Matiang’i performs strongly in several regions, including Nairobi at 30%, Nyanza and Central at 29% each, Rift Valley at 27%, and the Coast at 25%. His strongest age group is 36-45, where he registers 30% support.

Sifuna’s highest support comes from Western at 35%, followed by the Coast and Nyanza at 25% each. He leads among younger voters aged 18-26 with 27% support.

The survey was conducted from June 22 to 26 across all 47 counties. It sampled 3,000 adult respondents aged 18 and above using a mixed-mode approach. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.79 percentage points at a 95% confidence level and recorded a 99% response rate.

Overall Presidential Preference

In a broader presidential preference question that included incumbent President William Ruto, the president led with 32%. Musyoka followed at 13%, while Sifuna and Matiang’i tied at 12% each. Gachagua received 4%, Owino 3%, Maraga 2% and Karua 1%.

The findings are expected to shape discussions as the opposition seeks to coalesce around a single candidate to challenge Ruto in the 2027 general election.
