Huawei Graduates 200 Youth in Garissa as DigiTruck Expands Digital Skills Access

ICT Authority CEO Jessy Kiveu joins National Assembly Communication, Information and Innovation Committee Chairperson Hon. John Kiarie and local leaders at the Huawei DigiTruck graduation in Masalani, Ijara Constituency, Garissa County. Held on Saturday, 28 March.

Masalani, Garissa County, March 28, 2026 — Huawei has graduated 200 learners under its DigiTruck digital skills programme in Masalani, Ijara Constituency, marking a significant step in efforts to bridge the digital divide in underserved regions.

The graduation ceremony, held at Baraza Park, underscored the growing impact of the DigiTruck initiative, a mobile, solar-powered classroom designed to deliver hands-on digital training directly to remote communities. The programme equips participants with essential skills in digital literacy, online safety, entrepreneurship, and the practical use of digital tools.

By bringing training closer to the people, the initiative expands access to learning opportunities for individuals in marginalized areas, enhancing employability, improving livelihoods, and supporting the growth of small businesses. With this rollout, Garissa becomes the third county in North Eastern Kenya to benefit from the programme, following Wajir in 2026 and Mandera in 2021.

Leaders present at the event emphasized the importance of digital skills in driving inclusive development, particularly among young people. John Kiarie, Chair of the National Assembly Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation, said digital competencies are now essential for economic participation.

“Digital skills are no longer optional; they are foundational to economic participation and national competitiveness. Initiatives like DigiTruck ensure that young people in areas like Ijara are not left behind in Kenya’s digital transformation,” he said, urging graduates to leverage their skills to create jobs and solve local challenges.

Jessy Kiveu Maruti, Chief Executive Officer of the ICT Authority, lauded the programme as a model of effective public-private collaboration in advancing Kenya’s digital agenda.

“By extending access to digital training where it is needed most, DigiTruck is opening pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and essential services, ensuring that digital transformation is inclusive and impactful,” he noted.

Participants who completed the training highlighted improved confidence in navigating digital platforms, with many citing new opportunities in online work, entrepreneurship, and access to information.

The DigiTruck programme has so far reached 42 counties across Kenya, training nearly 10,500 youth, including women, teachers, and small business owners. The initiative also plays a critical role in addressing gender disparities in digital access, where women continue to lag behind men in mobile internet usage and digital skills.

As Huawei continues to scale up the programme nationwide, DigiTruck remains a key driver in equipping communities with practical digital competencies, ensuring more Kenyans can actively participate in the country’s growing digital economy.
