HDND Foundation Launches Empowerment Initiative to Restore Hope, Dignity Among Vulnerable Communities

HDND Foundation Founder and CEO Ms. Ruth Mueni makes remarks during the foundation’s launch event aimed at empowering young people through education, skills development and entrepreneurship at a Nairobi hotel on July 10th, 2026.

The Hopes, Dreams and Dignity (HDND) Foundation has launched an empowerment initiative aimed at creating opportunities for young people and vulnerable communities through education, mentorship, entrepreneurship and leadership development.

The initiative, unveiled during a charity gala dinner at a Nairobi hotel, seeks to provide practical solutions to challenges affecting communities by promoting self-reliance, skills development and dignity among beneficiaries.

Founded by Ms. Ruth Mueni, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hopes, Dreams and Dignity (HDND) Foundation, the organisation also launched the Executive Protocol Academy, a programme designed to equip individuals with professional and leadership skills.

Speaking during the event, Mueni said the foundation was established to inspire individuals and communities to take action in addressing challenges around them rather than waiting for external solutions.

She challenged stakeholders to support initiatives that create opportunities, citing programmes such as education support for girls and the proposed establishment of a menstrual bank to improve access to sanitary products.

“We need to understand where we are coming from and think about what we can do back at home that can make a difference,” Mueni said.

She noted that through the foundation’s programmes, more than 700 girls have been supported through partnerships, adding that the organisation aims to expand its education initiatives to reach more young people.

Mueni urged leaders and professionals to focus on giving back to society, saying success should be measured by the impact one creates in the lives of others.

“Can we be our brother’s keepers? Times are harsh, mental health challenges are affecting many people, so how do we help them navigate life by getting them ready?” she posed.

Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) Board Chairman James Mureu commended the initiative, saying it demonstrated how a personal vision could grow into a platform for transforming lives.

Mureu said many entrepreneurs begin their journeys with ambition but face obstacles that hinder their progress, calling for increased support towards small businesses and young innovators.

“It started with a dream. She came with a vision and invited us to walk the journey together. Today we are witnessing that vision becoming a reality,” he said.

He reaffirmed the need for institutions to support emerging entrepreneurs by providing opportunities and creating an environment where their ideas can thrive.

Leadership coach and development expert Dr. Wale Akinyemi challenged leaders to use their influence to create meaningful change, saying leadership should be measured by the number of lives transformed.

Akinyemi said he found purpose in supporting young people after seeking direction on how he could make a difference in society.

“I asked God to show me my Lazarus, and He showed me the young people of Kenya. Since then, my mission has been to love them, teach them and create opportunities for them,” he said.

Chief Corporate Affairs, Marketing and Partnership Officer at Nation Media Group Dr. Monica Ndung’u said young people across Africa were redefining industries, creating businesses and developing solutions to local challenges.

Ndung’u said institutions needed to move beyond inviting young people into conversations and instead create opportunities that matched their ambition and creativity.

She observed that the HDND Foundation represented a belief that young people could achieve their dreams when provided with the right support and platforms.

“Hope becomes powerful when people from different pathways come together to pursue it, and dignity comes from creating conditions for people to build sustainable and independent lives,” she said.

Founder of Foyina Beauty Enterprise Lucy Wambui, also known as Foyina, said skills development and entrepreneurship were key in empowering young people, especially women.

Wambui said her own journey in the beauty industry demonstrated the importance of equipping individuals with practical skills that enable them to become self-reliant.

“When a young woman learns a skill, she gains more than income. She gains dignity, choice and the power to decide her future,” she said.

The event brought together leaders from government, business, media, academia and civil society, who pledged support towards initiatives aimed at empowering young people and strengthening community development through partnerships.
