Fake Job Interviews Become New Phishing Trap

A public awareness campaign is warning job seekers to remain vigilant against phishing messages disguised as employment opportunities.

The campaign highlights fake job interview messages that promise applicants employment or interviews before demanding payment. One example tells a recipient they have been shortlisted for an interview but must pay KSh 1,500 to secure the interview slot.

Organisers say such demands should raise immediate suspicion because genuine employers do not charge applicants to attend interviews.

The campaign is also urging the public to avoid clicking links sent through unsolicited messages or sharing sensitive information with unknown recruiters. Job seekers have been advised to verify vacancies through official company websites and recognised recruitment platforms before responding.

The awareness drive comes as scammers increasingly use attractive job offers to target people seeking employment. Members of the public are encouraged to block suspicious contacts, avoid sending money and report suspected phishing attempts to relevant authorities.
