Duale Warns Rogue Health Facilities, Unveils Life-Saving Partnership with AKUH

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has sounded a strong warning to unqualified and non-compliant health facilities, revealing plans to publish a list of shame by 14th June 2025. The list will expose facilities previously contracted under the now-defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and accused of engaging in fraudulent activities.

Speaking during the launch of a landmark partnership between the Ministry of Health and Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Duale stressed that the government will not tolerate malpractice or unqualified personnel in the healthcare sector.

He affirmed that the crackdown is part of a broader agenda to streamline services under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program.

“We are committed to enforcing accountability in the health sector. Those who defraud the system or offer substandard services will be held responsible,” said the CS.

The new collaboration with AKUH will channel support through the Social Health Authority (SHA) for critical surgical procedures, including kidney transplants and heart surgeries. The initiative is designed to cushion Kenyans, especially the vulnerable, from devastating healthcare costs.

“This partnership is a key step in reducing catastrophic health expenses,” said Duale. “No Kenyan should be denied life-saving treatment due to lack of finances.”

He lauded AKUH for leading the way in supporting SHA beneficiaries and urged other health facilities whether public, private, or faith-based to follow suit.

The CS emphasized the need for full adherence to the SHA Tariff and Benefits Package, calling it essential for expanding access to essential care.

The dual-pronged approach cracking down on malpractice and enhancing care delivery marks a significant move in the Ministry’s efforts to revamp Kenya’s healthcare landscape under the UHC framework.
