Aga Khan University Celebrates Class of 2024 Graduation in Kenya

The Aga Khan University (AKU) marked a historic moment as it celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2024 in a ceremony attended by Princess Zahra Aga Khan.

The event paid tribute to the late founder and first Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan IV, while welcoming his successor, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V.A total of 164 graduates were conferred degrees in various fields, including nursing, midwifery, education, digital journalism, media leadership, and medicine.

For the first time, fellows from the Medical College, East Africa’s fellowship programme, participated in the convocation, with 16 specialists receiving certificates in cardiology, medical oncology, neonatology, nuclear medicine, and paediatric neurology.Reflecting on the institution’s legacy, AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin recalled the words of the founding Chancellor.

“The cornerstone of his vision was opportunity the opportunity to build a better life for oneself and one’s family. In Kenya and its neighbours, His Highness created opportunities for millions through the Aga Khan Development Network. Here at AKU, he gave our graduates an opportunity they have seized on – to acquire new knowledge, new skills, and a new perspective on their capacity to lead change.”

Princess Zahra Aga Khan delivered an emotional address, underscoring the significance of this year’s convocation.

“This year’s ceremony is especially meaningful as we honour the legacy of our founder and Chancellor’s visionary leadership, unwavering support, and great love for this University and its people,” she said.

Around the world, our alumni embody his aspiration for AKU graduates to be leaders and change agents who transform their professions, take on societal challenges, and uplift humanity.

A landmark achievement for AKU was also highlighted as the institution awarded its 5,000th degree or diploma in East Africa, underscoring its growing impact on the region’s education and professional sectors.

Valedictorian Elosy Naitore spoke passionately about the graduates’ role in shaping the future.

“Today, we are not just earning degrees. We are builders of a stronger, more inclusive healthcare system. Whether we treat patients, conduct research, or shape policies, we are part of something greater than ourselves,” she said.

The ceremony also recognized outstanding faculty and student achievements. Among the top graduates were Cebile Dlamini, Jedidah Ng’ang’a, and Elosy Naitore from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa, along with Grace Kerongo and Mugisha Tumwine from the Graduate School of Media and Communications.

The Medical College honoured Dr Chemutai Mercy for Sustained Excellence in Clinical Service, Dr Maryanne Mwangi for Sustained Excellence in Academics, Dr Brian Mongare for Sustained Excellence in Research, and Dr Ivy Wakahora for Best Performance.

Faculty members were also celebrated for their contributions. Assistant Professors Catherine Gathu and Timona Obura were recognized for mentorship and clinical teaching, respectively, while Dr Hassanali Ali received the Collaborative Award for Teaching and Senior Instructor Samuel Otido earned the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Professor Asad Raja was named a Distinguished University Professor, joining an elite group of only five individuals to receive this honor.

From the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Senior Instructor Serah Wachira, Instructor Beth Waweru, and Instructor Evah Maina earned Fellowships of the Higher Education Academy. Ms Wachira also received the Outstanding Teacher Award, while Ms Waweru was honored with the Public Service Award.

The Graduate School of Media and Communications acknowledged Assistant Professor Caroline Kiarie and Mr Henry Kibira for excellence in teaching, Mr Hesbon Owilla for research, and Associate Professor George Nyabuga and Professor Nancy Booker for their contributions to public service.

As AKU continues its mission of developing skilled professionals across various fields, the Class of 2024 stands poised to make significant contributions to society, embodying the University’s commitment to excellence, leadership, and service.
