Absa Kenya Reaffirms KES 60M Investment in 2025 Athletics Calendar

Absa Bank Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing athletics in the country by investing KES 60 million in the 2025 athletics calendar. The investment includes title sponsorship of the sixth edition of the prestigious Absa Kipkeino Classic, scheduled for May 31, 2025, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Lang’ata.

Out of the total investment, KES 40 million has been allocated to Athletics Kenya to support the organization and execution of the Kipkeino Classic. The remainder supports events such as the Absa Sirikwa Classic held earlier this year and upcoming youth athletics programs.

Speaking at the event’s launch, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya lauded Absa’s consistent support, terming it a shining example of effective public-private partnerships. “Absa’s steadfast support over six years has helped transform the Kipkeino Classic into a global event,” he said.

Absa Kenya’s Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Mwihaki Wachira, emphasized the bank’s long-standing dedication to sports. “Our investment in athletics is a reflection of our belief in sports as a unifier and a driver of national pride,” she noted, citing over KES 1.3 billion invested in Kenyan sports over the last decade.

The 2025 edition will feature 189 athletes, including 59 Kenyan stars, with fan favourites Ferdinand Omanyala, Mary Moraa, and Wiseman Were expected to shine alongside global icons like Jerome Blake, Mujinga Kambundji, and Tsaone Sebele.

Athletics Kenya President Gen. Jackson Tuwei hailed the Kipkeino Classic as Africa’s premier one-day event and expressed optimism for record attendance and viewership, calling it a key preparatory ground ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo.
