120 Kenya Army Dependents Enrolled at Defence Forces Technical College in Skills Partnership

Nairobi, January 29, 2026 — One hundred and twenty dependents of Kenya Army servicemen and women have been commissioned to join the Defence Forces Technical College, marking the fourth cohort under a skills development partnership between The Family Group Foundation and the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK).

The youths, aged between 18 and 25, will undergo a 12-week hands-on training programme delivered by the Nairobi Institute of Technology. The course equips them with practical technical and vocational skills in plumbing, electrical installation, solar technologies, and information communication technology (ICT), with certification awarded by the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC).

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at Embakasi Garrison, Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Ketter said the initiative goes beyond skills training to strengthen military families and communities. “This transformative partnership empowers dependents of Kenya Defence Forces personnel to become innovators, job creators, and contributors to national development,” he said.

Since its launch in 2023, the programme has trained more than 200 dependents of Kenya Defence Forces personnel, significantly boosting their employability and entrepreneurship prospects.

The Family Group Foundation Executive Director John Waimiri said the initiative has recorded strong outcomes, with over 80 per cent of graduates successfully transitioning into the job market. “We are proud of the impact this programme continues to make and remain committed to expanding access to dignified and sustainable income opportunities for young people,” he said.

The training forms part of the Foundation’s Tufuzu Youth Entrepreneurship Development Project, a shared values initiative that supports young adults with technical skills, access to labour markets, financing, and linkages to strategic partners in construction, entrepreneurship, and business management.
