USIU Flames, KU Pirates off to flying start at KUSF games

Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Premier League side United States International University (USIU) Flames made a strong start to their KUSF campaign after edging out University of Nairobi (UoN) Dynamites 51–26 in Wednesday morning’s opening fixture.
Flames coach George Mayenge termed the match a friendly encounter but said the victory was an encouraging sign as the championships get underway.
“We thank God for winning the opening game against our neighbours, University of Nairobi. Winning the first match is always important and this tournament also helps us build friendships,” said Mayenge.
The tactician added that competition remains healthy, noting that basketball is about learning and growth.
“If we lose, we learn from our mistakes. If we win, we push harder because everyone comes for you. We are still friends because basketball is a game of cycles,” said Mayenge, who is targeting another successful campaign.
With the delayed KBF league expected to tip off in February, Mayenge said KUSF is providing a vital platform for his players to stay competitive.
“I still have players who have not graduated and three to four freshers, and I hope to bring in more by January. As we wait for the league, KUSF keeps both our men and women active,” he said.
In men’s basketball, KBF Division One side Kenyatta University (KU) Pirates defeated hosts University of Eldoret 85–61 in their opening match.
KU Pirates captain Briann Musembi said the contest offered valuable preparation ahead of the league.
“It was a good but tough game. KUSF helps us gel, execute our plays and build chemistry as we prepare for the league in February 2026. In the next match, we want to go harder and score more,” said Musembi.
On the track, Kisii University’s Isaiah Kiriago underlined his fine form by winning the men’s 10,000m in 31:29.7. Fresh from clinching the Ultra Trail 23km Mountain Run title in South Africa, Kiriago beat Maseno’s Evanson Kipkirui (31:58.1), with JKUAT’s Dan Lolngojine finishing third in 32:24.3.
National 400m champion George Mutinda also impressed, winning heat three in 47.36 seconds. The University of Embu student was followed by JKUAT’s Jacob Jorim and Kenyatta University’s Collins Kipchirchir.
