Speaking during a media briefing in Nairobi, Mwaura said the event will feature the traditional Trooping of the Colour ceremony by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), alongside cultural performances and entertainment showcasing Kenya’s diversity.

“We invite all Kenyans to come out in large numbers for this significant national celebration,” Mwaura said. “Jamhuri Day gives us an important opportunity to reflect on our unity, patriotism and the progress we have made since attaining self-rule.”

Mwaura Gives Update on Jamhuri Day Thematic Week Activities

Mwaura also provided an update on activities undertaken during this year’s Jamhuri Day Thematic Week, held from December 8 – 11 under the theme “Tourism, Wildlife, Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE).”

He said the week was dedicated to positioning Kenya as a premier global tourism and MICE destination, noting that the sector plays a vital role in supporting aviation, hospitality, retail, culture and the wider economy.

“This year’s thematic focus allowed us to showcase Kenya’s ability to host major international events while strengthening our competitiveness in event bidding and investment in MICE infrastructure,” he said.

Mwaura highlighted Kenya’s strong tourism assets, including improved digital connectivity, expanding hotel capacity, enhanced conferencing facilities and iconic venues such as the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC), which he noted continue to attract business tourism and foreign investment.

The week’s programme featured youth mentorship activities, cultural showcases, traditional dances, fashion displays, panel discussions, and the lighting of the KICC Tower to celebrate Kenyan culture and creativity.

He said the government had also launched a holiday booking desk to promote domestic tourism by offering Kenyans information and affordable travel packages across the country.

One of the major highlights, Mwaura noted, was the release of the Wildlife Census Report, providing updated data on Kenya’s wildlife populations and conservation strides. He said this reinforces the importance of wildlife tourism to the country’s national brand and economic resilience.

The Thematic Week concluded with a town hall meeting bringing together stakeholders from the tourism, creative, wildlife and cultural sectors to discuss ways of enhancing Kenya’s global competitiveness.

Mwaura reaffirmed the government’s commitment to boosting tourism and MICE sectors as drivers of economic growth.

“Tourism, culture and wildlife remain central pillars of our economy,” he said. “By investing in MICE infrastructure and promoting cultural and wildlife tourism, Kenya continues to strengthen its position as a leading global destination.”
