Asembo Skills for Hope (ASH), a community-based organization committed to empowering young women in rural Kenya, officially launched the Asembo Skills Academy in Asembo Bay, Siaya County, on October 24, 2025. The colourful event also marked the graduation of the institution’s fifth cohort of 50 women and the enrollment of a new sixth cohort. It was a major milestone in the organization’s mission to tackle youth unemployment and gender inequality in the region.
The launch came after five years of continuous work since ASH began operations in 2020. Founded to address the persistent challenge of youth unemployment in rural areas, the organization has trained more than 120 young women in tailoring, entrepreneurship, and essential life skills. Many of the graduates have successfully started small businesses, increased household incomes, and ensured their children attend school, helping to break the cycle of poverty in their communities.
According to the organizers, the completion of Phase One construction of the new Asembo Skills Academy marked a turning point for both the organization and the Asembo community. The new campus will now accommodate up to 80 women every year, providing more opportunities for young women to access practical skills for sustainable livelihoods. “This launch was not just about a new building; it was a renewed promise to our young women,” said an ASH representative. “We are expanding opportunities so that no woman in Asembo is left behind because of poverty or lack of access to skills.”
Youth unemployment remains one of Kenya’s most pressing socio-economic challenges, with rural areas facing the greatest impact. Limited access to education, vocational training, and employment opportunities has continued to push many young people, especially women, into early marriages or low-income informal work. ASH’s model focuses on empowering women between the ages of 18 and 25 by providing employable skills while nurturing confidence and financial independence.
Each trainee at the Asembo Skills Academy undergoes a structured program that combines vocational courses with entrepreneurship and personal development. Graduates are further supported through the Graduate Success Program, which offers mentorship, savings groups, and access to microloans to help them start or expand their businesses. In addition, the organization runs a Wellbeing Support Program that provides counseling, family planning education, and gender-based violence prevention, ensuring the women receive holistic support to help them thrive personally and economically.
A major highlight of the launch was the introduction of Construction Skills Training as a new program. Traditionally considered a male-dominated field, the introduction of construction training aims to create higher-paying job opportunities for women and challenge gender barriers within the sector. During the event, guests toured the new training facilities and interacted with the first group of women enrolling in the construction course. “When women access skills in all sectors, including construction, they not only earn more but also change perceptions in their communities,” said the academy’s project coordinator.
The ceremony brought together community leaders, government officials, civil society representatives, and development partners who have supported ASH since its inception. The event featured the official dedication of the new campus, a fashion showcase displaying designs by graduating students, and speeches from key dignitaries. It was also a celebration of the resilience of the women who completed their training despite facing personal and financial hardships.
“When I joined the academy, I had no hope of ever owning a business,” said one of the graduates. “Now, I make and sell clothes in my village, and my children are in school. This program gave me dignity and confidence.”
Organizers expressed optimism that the launch and graduation would strengthen partnerships among stakeholders working to improve women’s livelihoods in Kenya. They also said the event was a chance to inspire collaboration between the government, private sector, and community-based organizations to scale up skill development programs for rural youth.
The event’s theme, “Empowering Women, Transforming Communities,” reflected ASH’s belief that sustainable development begins with equipping individuals with knowledge and tools to shape their futures. Organizers said the launch of the new campus will increase the visibility of the Asembo Skills Academy as a regional hub for women’s empowerment. It will also raise awareness about the importance of vocational training and encourage more investment in youth-focused programs.
Beyond individual empowerment, the Asembo Skills Academy represents a broader community effort to promote self-reliance and inclusive growth. Its success stories have already begun to inspire neighboring communities, where more young women are expressing interest in joining future cohorts. The new campus will provide the capacity and infrastructure needed to accommodate the growing demand for skills training.
With the facility now operational, ASH is positioning itself as a model institution that demonstrates how community-driven education can bring measurable social impact. The academy’s expansion is expected to open new economic pathways for rural women while creating ripple effects of stronger families, more resilient households, and empowered women who serve as role models in their communities.
ASH leaders emphasized that the launch of the Asembo Skills Academy is not only a win for the local community but also a symbol of what can be achieved when collective effort and determination meet a shared vision for empowerment. The success of the program, they said, proves that when women are supported to learn and grow, they can transform their families and communities.
As the Asembo Skills Academy begins a new chapter, the mood among the graduates, trainers, and guests was one of hope and pride. The community looked forward to a future where every young woman, regardless of her background, has the chance to learn, work, and lead with confidence.
