Jamia Mosque Nairobi has unveiled a commemorative book documenting its 100-year journey, marking a century of faith, service, and leadership at the heart of Kenya’s Muslim community.
The book, titled “Jamia Mosque Nairobi 100-Year Journey” and authored by Ghalib Yusuf Tamim, captures the mosque’s evolution from its foundation stone laid on September 7, 1925, to its completion in 1933. It highlights the mosque’s architectural heritage, expansion, and its role as East Africa’s largest national mosque. The publication is available at the mosque for KSh 1,500.
Speaking during the launch ceremony on Thursday, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale lauded the mosque’s leadership for its steadfast contribution to the growth of Islam and advocacy for the Muslim community.
“Jamia Mosque is the mother of all mosques in the country. I commend its leadership for their pivotal role in spreading Islam and for being at the forefront in championing the interests and aspirations of the Muslim community,” said Duale.
The CS also lauded the mosque’s humanitarian initiatives, noting that its programs have significantly contributed to improving the lives of the less privileged in society, he urged Islamic scholars and community leaders to leverage media platforms to guide and mentor young people.
“I call upon our Islamic scholars and community leaders to use media platforms to sensitize young people on the dangers of immoralities such as drug abuse so they can grow into responsible members of society,” he said.
Jamia Mosque Committee Chairman Sheikh Mohammed Osman Warfa reflected on the mosque’s historic construction, describing it as a monumental undertaking. He explained that the building stones were imported from India through the port of Mombasa and transported by rail to Nairobi. From the station, Indian railway workers carried each block on their shoulders to the construction site, where laborers worked under harsh colonial conditions and the constant threat of wild animals that roamed nearby.
Sheikh Warfa reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to continue the mosque’s core mission of Da’wah (propagation of Islam) and to preserve the legacy of its founders.
Author Ghalib Yusuf Tamim expressed gratitude to the Jamia Mosque leadership for the opportunity and support to undertake the project, noting that the publication will serve as a lasting heritage for future generations.
As part of the centennial celebrations, Jamia Mosque Nairobi also unveiled the rebranding of Horizon TV to Jamia TV, marking a new chapter for the premier Islamic television channel after eight years of impactful edutainment and growth.
The transition, unveiled on 30th October at Jamia Mosque Nairobi, represents a refreshed identity featuring a new logo, color scheme, and program lineup designed to reflect the station’s Islamic values and strengthen its role in Jamia Mosque’s Da’wah initiatives.
Jamia TV Board Chairman Abdullatif Essajee said the rebrand introduces a dynamic programming format featuring spiritual, educational, and lifestyle content tailored to enrich viewers’ experiences in line with Islamic principles.
The event was attended by members of the Jamia Mosque Majlis, trustees, and Jamia TV board members, among other dignitaries.
