Five outstanding Kenyan university students have returned home after a week-long immersive experience in China, where they participated in Huawei’s prestigious global initiative, Seeds for the Future 2025. The program, held from 21st to 25th July 2025, brought together young ICT talent from across the globe for an intensive exploration of cutting-edge technologies and cross-cultural learning.

The Kenyan delegation included Shem Machii Ngunjiri (Dedan Kimathi University of Technology), Sophy Cherono Rop (United States International University–Africa), Huldah Mwihaki Kaura (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology), Mungai Erick Gachuhi (Moi University), and Samuel Ochor Ogeno (University of Nairobi).

They joined participants from Brazil, Namibia, Portugal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Madagascar in a dynamic program focused on 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Smart City solutions.

Throughout the week, the students engaged in advanced ICT training and hands-on sessions, participated in guided tours of Huawei’s innovation centers, visited DJI’s headquarters, and attended high-level forums on digital transformation and tech entrepreneurship. The program offered not just technical learning, but also fostered global networking and cultural appreciation.

Making his speech during the closing ceremony, Samuel Ochor reflected, “A seed starts in the dark, buried in the soil unseen, uncertain, unimportant, but full of potential… Huawei ‘Seeds for the Future’ has been the fertile ground for our minds to flourish.” His words captured the essence of the program’s vision.

Huldah Mwihaki Kaura echoed this sentiment, noting, “This experience opened our eyes to how technology, culture, and collaboration can shape real solutions for the world.”

Michael Kamau, Manager of the Huawei ICT Academy in Kenya, lauded the students’ dedication. “These bright minds represent Kenya’s digital future. Through this program, we’re equipping them with world-class skills and global exposure to help lead Africa’s tech transformation.”

Since its inception in Kenya in 2014, Huawei’s Seeds for the Future has empowered dozens of young innovators, contributing significantly to national and continental digital development.

The 2025 edition further affirmed Huawei’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and nurturing future tech leaders through practical training, cultural immersion, and international collaboration.
