CitizenGO Appeals to Government to Retract Support for UN SOGI Mandate

Ann Kioko, Campaigns director for Africa, CITIZEN GO during a press briefing outside the ministry of foreign affairs building on Friday,11th, July 2025 in Nairobi.

A public appeal is urging the Kenyan government to withdraw its support for the UN SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) addressing Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Musalia Mudavadi.

The appeal, delivered by Ann Kioko, Campaigns Director for Africa at CitizenGO, was supported by 12,620 Kenyan citizens who signed a petition expressing strong opposition to Kenya’s vote in favour of renewing the mandate of the UN Independent Expert on SOGI on July 5, 2025.

Kioko clarified that the vote, according to petitioners, was cast without adequate public consultation and contradicts Kenya’s constitutional principles.

“The Constitution of Kenya upholds the family as the natural and fundamental unit of society, endorsing the SOGI mandate undermines this principle, as well as the religious, moral, and cultural values that define us as a people,” said Kioko.

The appeal described the SOGI mechanism as a politicized tool that pressures sovereign nations into adopting contentious ideologies, including legalisation of same-sex marriage, introduction of radical gender theory in schools, and limitations on religious and moral expression.

“By supporting this mandate, Kenya risks aligning itself with foreign agendas that are anti-family and anti-African. Countries like the United States voted against the resolution, while Kenya did not,” Kioko noted.

The group expressed deep concern, stating that the government’s decision had caused shock, grief, and anger among citizens, and represented a betrayal of the Constitution, the family unit, and the collective will of Kenyans

“Our vote is now being used internationally to advance ideologies that threaten our children, our values, and our national sovereignty,” she said.

Despite the vote having already taken place, the statement stressed that corrective action could still be taken.

“We respectfully urge His Excellency to issue a public clarification affirming that Kenya does not support the SOGI mandate and disassociates from the vote cast,” said Kioko.

The appeal concluded with a strong call for leadership and reaffirmation of national value

“The world is watching. The people of Kenya are praying. We call on the Prime Cabinet Secretary to stand boldly for Kenya’s identity, values, and sovereignty,” Kioko stressed.

CitizenGO affirmed its commitment to continue rallying public support in urging the government to reconsider its position in alignment with the Constitution and the cultural values of the Kenyan people.
