Equity Bank’s German Desk Strengthens Economic Ties Between East Africa and Germany

Equity Bank’s German Desk initiative is making significant strides in deepening trade and investment relations between East Africa and Germany, just eight months after its launch. The progress was highlighted during the inaugural Annual Status Update Meeting held in Nairobi, attended by German Ambassador to Kenya, Sebastian Groth, who described the early impact as “amazing.”

The German Desk, established through a partnership between Equity Bank and the German Development Finance Institution (DEG), offers bespoke financial services and relationship management support for German and European SMEs operating or looking to expand into the East African region.

Ambassador Groth noted that the initiative has already supported over 30 German and European enterprises that have opened accounts with Equity Bank and expanded their operations in the region.

“Just as East African companies are gaining visibility in Germany, we’re seeing strong interest from German companies exploring new opportunities here,” he said, lauding the desk for enabling smoother market entry and fostering cross-continental business linkages.

Equity Group Managing Director and CEO, Dr James Mwangi, hailed the Desk’s rapid evolution from a networking platform to a dynamic driver of investment and development.

“We are proud to be the only bank in Kenya to partner with DEG and establish a German Desk,” said Dr Mwangi. “This initiative is now a catalyst for sustainable development, joint ventures, and long-term partnerships across sectors.”

The event drew a strong turnout of enterprises benefiting from the Desk’s support, including Dieters’ Grill, Rödl & Partner, Alexander & Partner, and Bayer East Africa. These firms are helping onboard affiliates into Equity’s ecosystem banking services, further extending the desk’s reach.

Barbara von Toll, Director of DEG’s Regional Office, emphasized the Desk’s broader role in facilitating knowledge exchange, particularly in value addition, green industrialization, and digital innovation.

Complemented by business webinars and investor roadshows, the German Desk provides a comprehensive suite of services including credit lines, market linkages, and hands-on market exposure positioning Kenya as a strategic hub for German investment in the region.

The status update came just ahead of the “Made in Germany Africa” fair (MiGA) in Nairobi, reinforcing the Desk’s role in building economic bridges between continents, and translating partnerships into real, impactful progress.
