Kenya Airways Partners with Kenya Rugby Union to Boost Simbas’ World Cup Campaign

This partnership, through a KES 15 million in-kind sponsorship over the next 12 months, will empower local talent and support the ongoing growth of Kenyan rugby.

Kenya Airways (KQ) has officially partnered with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) to become the official airline sponsor of the national men’s rugby team, the Simbas, ahead of their Rugby World Cup journey.

The strategic agreement, valued at KES 15 million in-kind support, is set to run over the next 12 months and is geared towards promoting local talent and strengthening the continent’s sports footprint globally.

The partnership was unveiled during a signing ceremony held at the RFUEA Grounds along Ngong Road, just before the Simbas’ crucial warm-up match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The match is seen as a vital step for the team in their pursuit of a spot in the prestigious global tournament.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kenya Airways’ Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Julius Thairu underlined the importance of the partnership. “This collaboration is rooted in shared values of teamwork, tenacity, and transformation the spirit that defines rugby and our journey as the Pride of Africa,” Thairu said. “It reflects our commitment to uplifting local talent and empowering African champions to rise.”

The in-kind sponsorship includes logistical support, such as flights for the team’s international engagements, and is expected to ease the Simbas’ travel burden while allowing them to focus on performance.

Kenya Rugby Union officials welcomed the deal, terming it a timely boost that will not only assist the team in the short term but also contribute to the long-term development of rugby in Kenya.

With the Simbas eyeing global glory, this partnership marks a significant investment in the future of Kenyan sports, highlighting the critical role of corporate support in nurturing athletic excellence.
