St. George’s University Invites African Students to Apply for Fall 2025 Medical Program
St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, has opened applications for its Fall 2025 intake, with a special invitation to aspiring medical students from Africa.
SGU is truly an international institution, with a uniquely global perspective. The SGU School of Medicine is accredited by the Grenada Medical and Dental Council which has been recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
The school offers a four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree program. Students can also enter the MD degree program from any education system around the world via the five-, six-, or seven-year pathways. SGU has a large network of 75+ affiliated hospitals and health centres in the US and UK, with the unique opportunity for students to begin their medical career in Grenada or the UK.

The university, known globally for producing the highest number of doctors entering first-year U.S. residency programs over the past 11 years, continues to play a crucial role in addressing the global healthcare workforce shortage.
With over 1,035 residency placements expected in 2025, SGU offers an international medical education tailored to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals particularly in Africa, where the World Health Organization (WHO) projects a shortage of 6.1 million health workers by 2030.
David Anthonisz, Executive Director of International Student Recruitment at SGU, emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting African students. “We are thrilled to welcome applications from Africa for our August/September cohort. SGU is dedicated to developing a strong, globally competent medical workforce capable of addressing pressing healthcare needs,” he said.
SGU offers several financial aid opportunities to support international students, including scholarships based on merit and need. Students may choose from three annual intakes—January, April, and August—with the August cohort aligning with the global academic calendar for a smoother transition.

Additionally, through a longstanding partnership with Northumbria University in the UK, SGU provides African students with the flexibility to start their studies in either Grenada or the UK, with entry points in September and January.
“As part of our mission to enhance global healthcare, we remain committed to empowering African students with access to high-quality medical education,” added Anthonisz.
