Huawei’s DigiTruck Program Equips 6,000 Kenyan Youth with Digital Skills

Huawei’s DigiTruck program has reached a significant milestone, equipping 6,000 youth across Kenya with essential digital literacy skills since its launch in 2019.
The initiative, which brings technology training to underserved communities, continues to bridge the digital divide and empower young people to access online education, remote jobs and digital trade.
In 2024 alone, 1,648 youth received training under the program, with women making up 55 percent of the beneficiaries. The program has expanded its reach, covering 36 out of Kenya’s 47 counties as of December 2024.
DigiTruck, a mobile classroom converted from a shipping container, is fully equipped with laptops, smartphones and Virtual Reality headsets. It travels to remote areas, providing hands-on training in ICT to young people who might otherwise lack access to such resources.
The success of the initiative is largely attributed to strategic partnerships between Huawei Kenya, the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy, local county governments and training partners like Computers for Schools Kenya.
Speaking on Monday at the event, MP for Dagoretti South and Chair of the National Assembly’s Communication, Information and Innovation Committee John Kiarie praised the partnership for driving Kenya’s digital transformation.
“Real transformation comes from a shared vision. The DigiTruck partnership ensures that every school-leaving youth, especially from underserved communities, has the ICT skills needed to earn a livelihood or join the digital workforce.”he said.
Additionally,he further emphasized the role of technology in economic growth, noting that in today’s world, digital skills are as essential as basic literacy and numeracy.
He said that every sector including education, agriculture, finance and health is now linked to technology.
Making his remarks,Adam Lane, Government Affairs Director at Huawei Technologies Kenya, challenged the youth to leverage their digital skills for innovation and job creation which took place during the dissemination of the 2024 DigiTruck Status Report
“The skills you’ve gained are not just for navigating the digital space but for creating solutions within your communities. We encourage all young people to keep learning, upskilling and exploring new areas as emerging technologies shape the future.
Huawei’s DigiTruck initiative is playing a critical role in Kenya’s digital transformation, cultivating a tech-savvy workforce ready to drive innovation.
By equipping youth with digital literacy, the program contributes to local, regional, and global development goals, preparing young Kenyans for opportunities in the evolving digital economy.
