Safaricom equips Kiambu Polytechnic students with digital skills for future jobs

Students at Kiambu National Polytechnic have received practical training in digital technology, entrepreneurship and Agritech through the Safaricom Hook Circle programme, as efforts to prepare young people for an evolving job market gather pace.

The two-day programme, brought together industry experts and technology partners to expose students to emerging career opportunities beyond traditional employment.

Students gain practical digital skills

Participants took part in hands-on learning sessions, career talks, mentorship and technology demonstrations aimed at helping them understand how digital innovation is reshaping the workplace.

The programme, delivered in partnership with DigiFarm, Power Learn Project, Advanced Mobility Center and other industry experts, introduced students to practical applications of technology, entrepreneurship and Agritech while highlighting the skills increasingly required by employers.

Students also explored how digital tools are creating new business opportunities and alternative sources of income across different sectors.

“By bringing industry closer to learning institutions, we can help students better understand the opportunities available to them and the skills they need to pursue those opportunities, whether through employment, entrepreneurship or continued learning,” said Safaricom Chief Consumer Business Officer Fawzia Ali Kimanthi.

Preparing youth for the future of work

Safaricom said the initiative forms part of its Hook Circle programme, launched in 2023 to bridge the gap between education and the changing world of work through skills development, mentorship and career exposure.

The programme seeks to equip young people with knowledge and practical experience needed to navigate emerging industries driven by technology and innovation.

Through interactions with industry professionals, students gained insights into career pathways in digital technology, Agritech and entrepreneurship, while learning about the growing demand for digital skills in the labour market.

Over one million youths reached

According to Safaricom, the Hook Circle programme has so far reached more than one million young people across Meru, Mombasa, Nairobi, Kakamega, Siaya and Nyeri counties.

The telecommunications firm said it plans to continue expanding the initiative to ensure more young Kenyans acquire practical skills, industry exposure and mentorship that enhance their employability and entrepreneurial potential.

Young people aged between 10 and 24 years can join the Safaricom Hook community by dialling *555# or registering through the Safaricom App, giving them access to learning opportunities, mentorship programmes and youth-focused initiatives aimed at preparing them for the future of work.
