Spanish football has been thrown into fresh turmoil after Atletico Madrid emphatically rejected a staggering €150 million bid from fierce city rivals Real Madrid for star striker Julian Alvarez, sparking a war of words that has intensified one of football’s most bitter rivalries.

The dramatic transfer saga unfolded just days after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez secured another term in office, having campaigned on a promise to bring a new “galactico” to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Following his re-election victory, Perez wasted little time in making good on that pledge by launching an ambitious move for Alvarez, one of the most sought-after forwards in world football. However, Atletico swiftly slammed the door on any possibility of a deal, insisting that the Argentine international is not for sale.

In a statement, Real Madrid confirmed that it had formally offered €150 million for the 26-year-old striker’s federative rights. Atletico, however, pointed to Alvarez’s massive €500 million release clause and immediately rejected the proposal.

While transfer bids are often met with diplomatic responses, Atletico chose a far more confrontational route, publicly mocking their rivals in a series of explosive social media posts.

The club reposted Real Madrid’s statement alongside laughing emojis before escalating the feud with a stinging message.

“You must have confused education with gratitude, but to leave no doubt: we don’t thank you for anything,” Atletico said.

The Madrid-based club then doubled down on its attack.

“We neither study nor consider any offer for Julian. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than Barcelona does.”

In a final swipe, Atletico accused Real Madrid of targeting young talents from their academy system.

“Taking advantage of the good relationship with your new president, let’s see if you stop stealing players from our Academy.”

The extraordinary exchange has electrified Spanish football and highlighted Atletico’s determination to keep hold of a player who has quickly become central to their ambitions.

Alvarez joined Atletico from Premier League giants Manchester City in a deal worth £81.5 million in 2024. Since arriving in Spain, the World Cup-winning forward has developed into one of Europe’s most feared attackers.

Last season, he scored 20 goals in 49 appearances, helping Atletico secure a fourth-place finish in La Liga while also guiding the club to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

His performances have made him one of the most valuable players in the Spanish top flight, explaining Atletico’s reluctance to even entertain negotiations despite the eye-watering offer from their rivals.

For Real Madrid, the rejection represents an early setback in what is expected to be a busy summer of rebuilding after a disappointing campaign that ended without major silverware.

The club is already preparing for significant changes both on and off the pitch. Real have confirmed the departure of head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, ending a brief tenure that followed the exit of Xabi Alonso earlier this year.

Arbeloa, a former Real Madrid defender and youth academy graduate, had stepped up from Real Madrid B in January but was unable to steer the club back to trophy-winning ways.

In announcing his departure, Real Madrid paid tribute to his service and dedication.

“Real Madrid is deeply grateful to Alvaro Arbeloa, who throughout his time at the club has consistently demonstrated loyalty, commitment and professionalism. He exemplifies the values of our club,” the statement read.

The managerial change paves the way for the return of Jose Mourinho, one of the most successful and controversial figures in Real Madrid’s modern history.

Mourinho, who managed the club between 2010 and 2013, has already signed a three-year contract that became active following Perez’s election victory. His appointment was one of the centrepieces of Perez’s campaign and signals the beginning of a new era at the Bernabeu.

Yet before Mourinho even takes charge, Real Madrid have already found themselves at the centre of a fierce battle with Atletico. The failed Alvarez pursuit has not only exposed the gulf between the two clubs’ positions but has also reignited tensions that stretch far beyond the football pitch.

With Atletico standing firm and Alvarez remaining a key figure in their plans, Real Madrid may now be forced to look elsewhere for their next galactico as Spanish football braces for another explosive chapter in the rivalry between the capital’s bigges
