Kanja Effects Senior Police Reshuffle, Names New GSU Commandant

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered a reshuffle affecting three senior officers in changes approved by the National Police Service Board.

In a communication dated June 10, Mr Kanja said the redeployments take effect immediately.

The changes see Assistant Inspector General Johana Kiplangat Tonui moved from the Directorate of Operations in the Kenya Police Service to head the General Service Unit (GSU) as Commandant.

Assistant Inspector General Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa, who has been serving within the GSU, has been appointed Deputy Commandant of the elite unit.

At the same time, Assistant Inspector General Paul Maingo Mumo has been transferred from the Directorate of Quality Assurance to the Internal Affairs Unit, where he will serve as Director.

“This is to inform you that the National Police Service Board has approved the deployment of the following officers with immediate effect,” Mr Kanja said in the notice.

The reshuffle places new leadership at two critical departments within the National Police Service.

The GSU is a specialised paramilitary wing that supports national security operations, including counter-terrorism, protection of key installations and response to major security incidents.

The Internal Affairs Unit, on the other hand, is charged with investigating complaints against police officers and promoting accountability and professionalism within the service.

The latest changes come as the National Police Service continues to reorganise its command structure to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen oversight mechanisms.
