Tanui Urges Clean Competition as Eldoret City Marathon Nears Registration Deadline

Eldoret City Marathon Race Director Moses Tanui has called on coaches to rally more short-distance runners to take part in this year’s race, pointing to new categories and incentives designed to broaden competition.

Speaking ahead of the registration deadline, Tanui unveiled the Governor’s One Mile race, a new addition aimed at attracting speed-focused athletes and diversifying the marathon programme.

“We have the Governor’s One Mile and other incentives in place. I urge coaches to encourage short race runners to come and compete,” he said.

Tanui also assured participants of enhanced safety, noting that comprehensive security measures have been put in place.

“Security will be top notch,” he affirmed.

At the same time, he emphasized the need to uphold integrity in athletics, warning that strict anti-doping protocols will be enforced in line with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards.

“We need you to run clean. We will test athletes according to WADA regulations,” he added.

Registration for the marathon closes on Friday, with organizers confirming that at least 1,200 elite athletes have already signed up—an indication of strong interest in the race.

Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim said the marathon is part of a broader plan to position Eldoret as a global sports hub while driving economic growth and international recognition.

“This race is building Eldoret into a global sports city, boosting economic growth and global recognition,” he said.

The event will also feature a 10km fun run aimed at promoting fitness and community participation.

“We have a 10km fun run where people will run for their health, though there are prizes,” the governor added.

Winners in the main race will receive cash awards from position one to 20, with the top athlete set to pocket Sh3.5 million.

Organizers say the marathon is not only about elite competition but also about inspiring the next generation of athletes.

The event has attracted support from several sponsors, including Christ Is the Answer Ministries (CITAM), Kenya Seed Company, Tourism Fund, Sports Fund and Real Hospital, among others.

The Eldoret City Marathon continues to cement its place as one of Kenya’s premier road races, attracting top local and international talent while promoting clean sport, safety and community participation.
