AI Adoption in PR Takes Center Stage as Africa Global PR Week Opens in Nairobi
Nairobi, Kenya, 27th August 2025 – Nairobi has kicked off the highly anticipated Africa Global Public Relations Week (AGPRW) 2025 with a colorful opening ceremony that has drawn PR professionals, communication experts, and industry leaders from across Africa and beyond. This year’s event, themed “Beyond Conversations: Redefining PR, Redefining Africa,” is placing artificial intelligence (AI) at the heart of discussions on the future of public relations.
As digital technologies reshape global communication, PR practitioners in Africa are increasingly adopting AI to analyze data, automate routine tasks, and deliver more targeted, impactful campaigns. From personalized storytelling to real-time crisis management, AI is redefining how brands and institutions engage with audiences.
In her keynote address, Mary Njoki, Founder and CEO of Glass House PR Limited, said Africa’s PR industry is entering a defining moment. “With over 384 million social media users, a young, tech-savvy population, and growing internet penetration, we are uniquely positioned to integrate AI into our strategies. This week is not only a celebration of progress but also a forward-looking dialogue on how AI will transform PR in Africa,” she remarked.
Njoki also stressed the importance of mobile technology, noting that while AI is the focus, mobile phones remain the most powerful communication tool on the continent. “When we think of technology, we often think of AI, but we must also recognize the power of mobile phones, which are in every home across Africa. This is technology we can use to reach everyone,” she added.
Adding a continental perspective, Bianca de Beer, Senior Marketing Manager at First for Women Insurance in South Africa, emphasized the need to tailor AI to reflect African realities. “The best way to harness AI is to make it reflect our context. By feeding AI with African values and stories, we can create solutions that truly resonate with local audiences,” she said in a virtual address.
Kenya’s Nyandia Gachago, Founder of Mintylime, raised concerns about accessibility, noting that while Kenya already has more than 20 AI tools, many professionals still face barriers to use. “AI speaks like us, but the reality is not everyone has the means to tap into its full potential,” she said.
AGPRW 2025 features an AI and PR Masterclass, showcasing practical applications of AI in campaign design, content creation, predictive analytics, and crisis communication. Other sessions will explore AI’s role in building trust through authentic narratives, amplifying African voices on global platforms, and leveraging PR for socio-economic development.
The conference has attracted representatives from more than 25 countries, including participants from global PR agencies, technology providers, academic institutions, and media organizations. Keynote speakers include Dr. Yetty Ogunnubi, CEO of YD Company (Nigeria), Israel Opayemi, Managing Director of Chain Reactions Africa, and Paul Holmes, Founder & CEO of PRovoke Media.
A major highlight of the event is the Youth and Innovation Hub, designed to empower young professionals and university students. The hub provides mentorship opportunities, a platform for showcasing creativity, and pathways to careers in PR and strategic communication.
As the conversations unfold, AGPRW 2025 is expected to set new benchmarks for Africa’s communication industry. With AI adoption taking center stage, the event is positioning the continent not only as a consumer of technology but also as a leader in shaping innovative, inclusive communication strategies for the future.
