Africa Launches Pan-Continental Innovation Network to Drive Sustainable Growth

The launch of the Innovation Agencies in Africa (IAA) Network is a pivotal development that seeks to revolutionize Africa’s innovation landscape by connecting national and regional ecosystems to tackle the continent’s pressing challenges and drive sustainable growth.

IAA Network addresses a crucial need for a unified approach to innovation with Africa facing rapid technological changes and critical issues like climate change.

The network aims to harness homegrown, globally competitive solutions to foster sustainable growth.

Research by the University of Johannesburg’s Trilateral Research Chair in Transformative Innovation has emphasized the importance of robust innovation systems.

It highlights the critical role of innovation agencies as intermediaries, bridging public policies with the private sector and academia to accelerate progress.

Strategic Collaboration, the IAA Network’s creation is backed by a coalition of leading organizations, including International Development Research Centre (Canada), National Research Foundation (South Africa), Department of Science and Innovation (South Africa) and Technology Innovation Agency (South Africa).

These partners have mobilized over 2 million Canadian dollars to fund the initiative, which builds on efforts like the Science Granting Councils Initiative,Goals and Key Players.

The network focuses on driving innovation commercialization, building innovation based value chains and addressing Africa specific challenges through innovative solutions founding members such as the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), Namibia National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) and the University of Johannesburg will play a critical role in scaling the network continent wide.

In his leadership and Vision at the event, President William Ruto underscored the importance of innovation in addressing Africa’s challenges.

He praised initiatives like the IAA Network for their potential to position Africa as a global leader in innovation.

“Through collaboration and bold solutions, we are shaping a future where Africa leads the way in solving global challenges,” he said.

IAA Network has call upon collaboration and action for stakeholders across Africa and the globe to pool resources and share expertise in order to unlock Africa’s innovation potential, promote inclusive and sustainable development.
