Nairobi Hospital Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Children’s Lifesaving Heart Surgeries

The Nairobi Hospital held its annual Children’s Charity Heart Fund Golf Tournamentat the Karen Country Club, rallying support to save young lives affected by congenital heart disease (CHD). Under the theme Giving Little Hearts Big Dreams, the event drew corporate sponsors, medical professionals, donors, and golf enthusiasts with a united goal to provide free, life-saving heart surgeries to children from underserved communities.

The Children’s Charity Heart Fund has already facilitated over 400 successful surgeries for children aged 0 to 12, offering them a second chance at life. Funds raised from this year’s tournament will continue to support diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for even more children battling CHD, the most common birth defect worldwide.

Speaking at the event, Nairobi Hospital CEO Felix Osano highlighted the growing impact of the initiative. “This tournament has grown beyond just a fundraiser; it’s become a beacon of hope for families unable to afford critical cardiac care. Through corporate partnerships, we’ve expanded access to services and pushed forward our mission of sustainable, equitable healthcare in Kenya,” he said.

Dr. Barcley Onyambu, Chairperson of the Hospital Board, emphasized the long-term vision of ensuring equitable healthcare access for all children. “Many of these children represent the future of our nation. By giving them access to quality medical care, we’re investing in a healthier, more resilient generation,” he noted.

Statistics from the World Health Organization paint a stark picture more than 5,000 Kenyan children require heart surgery each year, yet fewer than 200 are treated locally or abroad due to financial and infrastructural barriers. With only two hospitals performing pediatric open-heart surgeries and fewer than 15 pediatric cardiologists nationwide, the need for sustained support is urgent.

Nicodemous Odongo, Director of Strategy and Innovation at Nairobi Hospital, stressed the hospital’s corporate social responsibility role. “We receive many critical cases each year. While some families can afford treatment, many cannot. This event is our way of mobilizing the community to step in where the system falls short.”

The hospital reiterated its commitment to advancing medical excellence through workforce development, patient-centered innovations, and global partnerships. All proceeds from the tournament will go directly into the Heart Fund, reaffirming Nairobi Hospital’s role at the forefront of Kenya’s medical transformation and ensuring that more children get a chance to live full, healthy lives
