The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with county governments to enhance quality standards in infrastructure development.
The collaboration, which kicked off with the Council of Governors (COG), is aimed at ensuring counties adhere to proper engineering standards in all construction projects.
Speaking during a joint event with Makueni County, IEK President Shammah Kiteme highlighted the importance of supporting devolved units through initiatives that promote quality control and assurance.
The Institute has already developed a Site Inspection Handbook in partnership with the National Construction Authority and county governors. This tool aims to address the growing concerns over substandard construction across the country.
IEK President emphasized the need for uniform construction standards, citing past incidents of building collapses as a wake-up call for all stakeholders.
“Our members are active in counties, and we want to ensure the public enjoys safe, high-quality infrastructure,” he said.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. lauded the partnership, describing it as a timely opportunity to tap into the expertise of engineers.
He signed a Memorandum of Understanding and a Memorandum of Agreement with IEK, which he believes will not only help enhance project quality in the county but also provide opportunities for local engineers to advance professionally.
Kilonzo revealed that IEK is already assisting in resolving a dispute on affordable housing over concerns about construction material quality.
“We need expert input to guide the Cabinet on whether to approve or seek remedial measures,” he noted.
He urged other governors to follow suit and partner with IEK, stressing the importance of third-party expert advice in ensuring the safety, compliance, and quality of public projects. “We owe it to Kenyans to ensure every shilling spent delivers value,” he stated.
