Two Years of War,Sudan Conflict Conference Calls for Urgent Action on Recovery and Resilience
As the war in Sudan enters its third year, experts, policymakers, and humanitarian actors are meeting in Nairobi for a pivotal two-day conference themed “Two Years of Crisis: Impact and Pathways to Recovery and Resilience.”
Organized by CGIAR and the Sudan Strategy Support Program (SSSP), the event seeks to spotlight the deepening humanitarian crisis and explore practical pathways for recovery.
Since the outbreak of conflict on April 15, 2023, Sudan has witnessed devastating consequences: over 12,000 people have died as of January 2025, with more than 15,500 fatalities recorded in 2023 and 2024.
The war, initially contained to specific regions, has now spread into previously unaffected areas, escalating displacement and exerting immense pressure on already fragile infrastructure. The human toll is staggering. More than 1.1 million Sudanese have sought refuge abroad, while millions more are displaced within the country.
Food insecurity has reached historic highs, with nearly half of the population 24.6 million people facing acute hunger. Economic systems are in disarray, and livelihoods across urban and rural communities have collapsed.
The Sudan Strategy Support Program (SSSP) is at the forefront of providing evidence-based research and policy recommendations to tackle these challenges. This conference marks a critical moment for the global community to assess the impacts of the conflict and strategize on sustainable solutions.
Key Objectives of the Conference Include:Sharing Research Findings: Present results from ongoing studies, including a preview of an upcoming book with 16 chapters focused on the Sudan conflict eight of which will be unveiled at the event.
Drawing Lessons from Other Conflicts: Examine successful peace and recovery processes from other regions to inform Sudan’s path forward.Policy Dialogue: Facilitate meaningful discussions on both immediate relief and long-term interventions.Formulating Practical Recommendations: Develop concrete strategies to support resilience-building and post-conflict recovery in Sudan.
As the war continues to unravel Sudan’s social and economic fabric, the need for coordinated, data-driven, and humanitarian-focused solutions has never been more .
