PMI Partners with GPM in Strategic Move to Integrate Sustainability into Global Project Management
In a strategic move set to reshape the future of project management, the Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading authority for project professionals, has signed a landmark agreement with Green Project Management (GPM) to form a new joint venture focused on advancing sustainable and regenerative project practices.
Under the agreement, PMI acquires a majority stake in the venture, which will integrate GPM’s robust suite of sustainability-focused assets including internationally recognized standards, tools, guides, certifications, and learning frameworks into PMI’s global ecosystem.
PMI is the leading authority in project management, dedicated to guiding the way to project success. Since 1969, PMI has shone a light on the power of project management and the people behind the projects.
With a global community, gold-standard professional certifications, and career-long learning opportunities, PMI empowers current and aspiring project professionals, as well as organisations, with knowledge and resources to lead effectively and create an impact in the communities they serve. Join PMI in elevating our world one project at a time.
GPM will retain its research and advisory role, as well as a minority share in the new venture for at least five years, contributing thought leadership and expertise.
“This joint venture is about placing project professionals at the center of sustainability transformation,” said PMI President and CEO Pierre Le Manh.
“With GPM’s pioneering tools now fully integrated into PMI, we’re equipping our global community to turn intentions into measurable impact delivering change that is practical, scalable, and necessary.”
The initiative comes at a critical time as the urgency for sustainable development intensifies. PMI research reveals that projects aligned with social good are nearly twice as likely to succeed.
Yet, only 22% of current projects meet this benchmark, signaling a vast opportunity to embed sustainability across industries.
The joint venture will incorporate GPM’s hallmark resources including the GPM® P5 Standard for Sustainability in Project Management and the Sustainability Competence Standard into PMI’s learning platforms and certification programs.
These tools offer professionals clear guidance for integrating sustainability into every phase of the project lifecycle. In Africa, the impact could be transformative.
“Sustainability is not a luxury for Africa; it is essential to our growth and future,” said George Asamani, PMI’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa.
“This joint venture empowers project leaders across the continent to drive solutions that support both people and the planet.”
PMI and GPM have collaborated since 2022, with GPM’s certifications and content featured on PMI’s digital platforms, including its AI-powered knowledge hub, PMI Infinity.
This new venture cements their shared mission of using projects to elevate global prosperity, resilience, and equity.
Joel Carboni, GPM Founder and a pioneer in sustainable project management, emphasized the broader vision:
“The future of project management must move beyond delivering outputs. This venture brings us closer to a profession that restores ecosystems, builds equity, and generates lasting value.”
The collaboration marks a pivotal shift in the evolution of project management one that recognizes sustainability not as an add-on, but as a core driver of meaningful, future-ready progress.
