Kenya Youth Organization Raises Objection to Charles Nyachae’s IEBC Chairmanship Bid

The Kenya Youth Organization (K.Y.O) has formally objected to the candidature of Charles Nyachae for the position of Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), citing concerns over integrity and ethical suitability.

In a memorandum dated March 17, 2025, and addressed to the IEBC Selection Panel, K.Y.O emphasized the crucial role of the electoral commission in safeguarding Kenya’s democracy. The organization argues that the appointment of the IEBC Chairperson must adhere to the highest ethical and moral standards, as outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya (2010), which governs leadership and integrity in public office.

The objection highlights several concerns that, according to K.Y.O, may compromise Nyachae’s ability to lead the IEBC impartially and effectively.

Chief among these is an alleged lack of transparency in his past professional conduct. The memorandum states that for the IEBC to maintain credibility, its leader must be beyond reproach, commanding public trust and confidence.

“The IEBC Chairperson must be a figure of unquestionable integrity, free from any perception of bias or unethical conduct. Any doubts about a candidate’s impartiality risk undermining not only the commission’s credibility but also the integrity of the electoral process,” the memorandum reads in part.K.Y.O also raises concerns about Nyachae’s professional history, questioning whether he meets the stringent ethical requirements outlined in Kenya’s Constitution.

The organization warns that appointing a Chairperson with unresolved ethical concerns could erode public confidence in the electoral body, both locally and internationally.

The organization is urging the IEBC Selection Panel to uphold transparency and inclusivity in the recruitment process, ensuring that the final appointee is widely accepted as credible and impartial.

“The selection panel has a duty to safeguard Kenya’s democratic future by ensuring that the individual chosen to lead the IEBC possesses the necessary experience, skills, and personal integrity to oversee free, fair, and credible elections,” the memorandum asserts.

Given Kenya’s history of disputed elections and political tensions, K.Y.O stresses the need for a leader who can rise above political influence and uphold the principles of fairness and accountability.

The group is calling on Kenyans to remain vigilant and engaged in the selection process, emphasizing that the credibility of the IEBC is fundamental to the stability of the nation’s democratic system. As the selection process unfolds, K.Y.O insists that the panel must carefully evaluate all candidates, ensuring that the final decision aligns with the best interests of the country.

“The future of Kenya’s democratic process depends on the careful selection of an IEBC Chairperson who is fully committed to upholding the Constitution and serving the people of Kenya with unwavering integrity,” the memorandum concludes. Is this conversation helpful so far?
