Over 340 Cyclists Set for Africa Road Championships in Kisumu

More than 340 cyclists from over 30 African countries are expected in Kisumu for the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Road Africa Championships, scheduled for October 21 to 25.

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the five-day competition would bring together some of the continent’s top cycling talent, with Kenya hosting the championships for the third consecutive time.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mwangi said the event underscores the government’s commitment to developing sports talent, boosting the economy and strengthening Kenya’s international sporting profile.

“Hosting this prestigious championship for the third consecutive time reaffirms Kenya’s growing stature as a continental sporting powerhouse,” he said.

Beyond the competition, the championships are expected to boost tourism and create business opportunities for traders and enterprises in Kisumu.

The event will showcase the lakeside city’s scenery, culture and hospitality, with the influx of athletes, officials, visitors and cycling enthusiasts expected to support local businesses during the competition.

A Family Fun Ride scheduled for Saturday morning will also provide an opportunity for residents and visitors to participate in the event while promoting healthy living and community engagement.

The championships will officially begin on Wednesday, October 21, with the government calling on Kenyans, cycling enthusiasts and visitors to turn out in large numbers to support the participating athletes.

Mwangi said the event would offer spectators five days of competitive cycling while positioning Kisumu as a destination for sports tourism and major international events.

The championships form part of Kenya’s broader efforts to use sports as a platform for talent development, tourism promotion and economic growth.
